Key WHMIS Responsibilities:

  • Employer Responsibilities (in this case, the fire department):
    • Ensure proper labeling of hazardous products.
    • Provide access to Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
    • Deliver comprehensive WHMIS education and training to all personnel.
    • Implement safe handling, storage, and disposal procedures.
    • Maintain accurate inventory of hazardous products.
  • Worker Responsibilities (volunteer firefighters):
    • Participate in WHMIS training.
    • Follow safe work procedures.
    • Understand the hazards of the products they handle.
    • Check labels and SDSs.
    • Report any concerns.
