LONG LAKE WILDFIRES COMPLEX, ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1:00 PM

The Long Lake wildfires complex remains out of control and is still estimated at 8,468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. Re-entry for some evacuees begins today, visit https://annapoliscounty.ca/ for more details.

Crews are wrapping up work on the northern end of the fire. This area has solid protections in place. Aircraft will monitor for any changes in this area that would require crews to move back to protect structures.

Crews and machinery are repositioning to the fire’s southern end to build additional dozer guards and protections. Aircraft are dropping large amounts of water in this area.

Ten helicopters, four planes and a bird dog are in action. Firefighters on site are: four Department of Natural Resources, 61 Ontario, 40 Quebec, 65 local. There are about 50 pieces of heavy machinery.

The next update will be around midday tomorrow.

Following the partial re-entry of residents in Annapolis County, the evacuation shelter located at NSCC Middleton will transition to standby status on September 4 at 8 am. It will be reinstated, if needed.

There are four stages of a wildfire: out of control, being held, under control, and extinguished. Evacuation decisions are not necessarily tied to the wildfire status. While good progress is being made on the Long Lake wildfire, its status is still out of control.

The Long Lake wildfires complex remains out of control, still estimated at 8468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. Crews have made good progress with dozer guards and laying hose lines, and aircraft water drops were very successful yesterday.

Resources today include 10 helicopters, four planes and a bird dog in action. Firefighters on site include four Department of Natural Resources (DNR), 60 Ontario, 40 Quebec, and 60 local, along with about 30 pieces of heavy machinery.

LONG LAKE WILDFIRES COMPLEX, ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, SEPTEMBER 5, 12:20 PM

The Long Lake wildfires complex is still out of control and estimated at 8468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. Morale is high as crews make good progress around the perimeter. Aircraft are dropping water, making it safe for ground crews to tie in hose lines and advance inward on the fire.

Resources on hand include 10 helicopters, four planes and a bird dog. Firefighters on site include 24 Department of Natural Resources (DNR), 39 Ontario, 40 Quebec, and 60 local, along with about 30 pieces of heavy machinery. The next update will be around midday tomorrow.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is still out of control and estimated at 8468 hectares. While good progress has been made around the perimeter, it’s still unsafe for public to enter the fire zone. High winds are expected later today which may affect fire behaviour.

Resources today include 12 helicopters, and about 30 pieces of heavy machinery. Firefighters on site include 24 Department of Natural Resources (DNR), 18 Ontario, 40 Quebec, and 60 local. The next update will be around midday tomorrow.

12:15p Updates

LONG LAKE WILDFIRES COMPLEX, ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, SEPTEMBER 7, 12:15PM

The Long Lake wildfires complex is still estimated at 8468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. While crews have wrapped the perimeter of the wildfire with fire breaks – a mix of dozer guards and hose lines – the fire is still out of control.

Firefighters are now advancing from the perimeter inward on the fire. In some areas, they are in 150 to 300 feet. After a very dry day yesterday, rain is expected in the area today which will help the firefighting effort.

Resources on hand include 40 Department of Natural Resources (DNR), 18 Ontario, 40 Quebec and 60 local firefighters, along with 12 helicopters, 4 planes plus bird dog, and about 5 pieces of heavy machinery. The next update will be around midday tomorrow.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is estimated at 8,468 hectares. We’re pleased to report the fire is now being held. That means it is not likely to grow or move as long as conditions don’t change. It is still not under control. It could still grow if conditions change.

There are no new reports of damage. Some people whose properties are outside the active wildfire zone will be able to return home tomorrow. Rain yesterday was welcome but not enough to put out the fire. Firefighters are advancing from the perimeter inward on the fire.

Resources on hand include 11 helicopters, four planes with a bird dog, about 10 pieces of heavy equipment, 40 Department of Natural Resources firefighters, 18 from Ontario and 60 from Quebec, as well as support staff.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is still being held at 8,468 hectares. Crews are making progress, working inward from the edges of the fire zone. They’re seeking out fire burning underground, dousing tree roots, soil, mosses etc, working on buffers around areas that haven’t burned.

Crews are taking a systematic approach to make populated areas safe again. They are working around properties, checking for ash pits that could burn people or animals that walk on them, and taking down unstable trees. Removal of downed power poles and lines is also ongoing.

Resources today include 11 helicopters, 4 planes with bird dog, about 7 pieces of heavy equipment. 40 DNR, 18 Ontario, 60 Quebec firefighters, plus support staff.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is still being held at 8468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage to properties. Weather is generally expected to be dry with minimal rain through the rest of the week, although fog and heavy dew are helping with firefighting efforts.

Crews continue to work inward from the outer edges of the active wildfire zone. It’s a challenge on the western flank because of how deeply the fire is burning and at the southwest corner where hot spots are persistent. On the eastern side, crews are in about 150 feet and advancing.

Work also continues to map and address hazards in a 300-foot radius of each property in the West Dalhousie area. Crews are looking for and addressing hazards like hot spots, ash pits and trees with weakened roots due to fire burning underground.

The Long Lake wildfires complex continues to be held at an estimated 8468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. Crews had a very productive day yesterday, as weather conditions were in their favour. Today has the potential to be the same. The lack of rain presents challenges with dry fuel.

The southern half of the fire is still seeing persistent fire activity that is being actioned by fire crews with aircraft dropping water. Crews also still working on eliminating hazards and securing an area of 300 feet around each West Dalhousie property.

Resources today include eight helicopters, four planes and a bird dog, seven pieces of heavy equipment and seven water tankers. Firefighters on site include: 37 Department of Natural Resources, 60 Quebec, and support staff.

The risk of wildfires is now low enough in Pictou and Colchester counties to allow restrictions on travel and activities in the woods to be lifted today, September 11.

With the change, effective at 4 p.m., half the counties in the province will no longer be under the restrictions.

Restrictions were lifted in the following counties on August 29:

• Cape Breton
• Richmond
• Victoria
• Inverness
• Guysborough
• Antigonish
• Halifax.

The burn ban remains in place for the entire province until October 15 – regarded as the end of wildfire season – or until conditions improve further.

In the rest of the province, conditions continue to be extremely dry and hazardous, so the woods restrictions will remain in place until October 15 or until conditions allow them to be lifted.

• Hants
• Lunenburg
• Kings
• Annapolis
• Queens
• Shelburne
• Digby

The Long Lake wildfires complex continues to be held at an estimated 8468 hectares. No new reports of damage. Yesterday, crews had another very successful day and made good progress. They have advanced 100-150 feet inward on the eastern side of the fire.

With dry weather, the fire continues to burn deep and hot in some areas of the interior. Crews are using infrared scanners that detect heat to identify areas to focus on. Crews also continue working to remove hazards like hot spots, ash pits, and trees with weakened roots.

The Long Lake wildfires complex continues to be held at an estimated 8468 hectares. No new reports of damage. Crews are continuing to work on hotspots, take down dangerous trees and action ash pits around properties and advance inward on the fire.

Conditions remain dry which makes work harder for crews. The southern half of the fire is still burning persistently and hot. Crews are working to suppress these areas with support from aircraft dropping water. The depth of burn makes this more difficult.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is being held at an estimated 8468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. The fire size is the current estimate of the perimeter, with multiple fires inside this active wildfire zone. This number won’t change unless it grows or a more precise measurement is made.

The fire is not spreading outwards but can still spread to spots inside the active wildfire zone that are not already burned. Dry conditions are causing quiet areas to become active again. Crews continue advancing inward to fight the fire and addressing hazards around properties.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is being held at an estimated 8,468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. More people whose properties are outside the active wildfire zone will be able to return home tomorrow. Other evacuated areas are still too unsafe to return to at this time.

Crews have completed a fire break inside the active wildfire zone at the southern end to help stop the fire spreading in the interior. Dry conditions continue, making the fire burn deeper. Crews spend time digging to find where it is burning underground and extinguish these spots.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is being held at an estimated 8,468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. Re-entry begins for 17 more residences outside of the active wildfire zone today. Dry conditions will continue to persist for this week.

Staff have used drones with infrared cameras to inspect the northern part of the fire. The technology helps identify hot spots and determine where to focus firefighting efforts. Crews are addressing these spots. The aim is to repeat this practice in other areas of the fire when possible.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is being held at an estimated 8,468 hectares. No new reports of damage. The incident command post moved back to the West Dalhousie Community Centre yesterday – a piece of important community infrastructure that was saved earlier in the firefighting effort.

Infrared camera scans are continuing and showing good progress on active areas in the northern portion of the fire. Conditions continue to get drier, making it easier for new fires to pop up inside the active wildfire zone and quiet areas to become active again.

Resources working on the fire today include 5 helicopters, 2 pieces of heavy equipment and 7 water tankers. Firefighters onsite: 45 Department of Natural Resources, 17 from Quebec, 19 from Parks Canada, plus support staff. NWT planes are flying to meet recertification requirements, not actively working on the fire.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is being held at an estimated 8,468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. Road crews are repairing damaged roads where they can inside the active wildfire zone. Nova Scotia Power continues to inspect and repair its infrastructure in the area.

Dry conditions mean more areas could burn within the active wildfire zone. Crews are working on hot spots near the perimeter to reinforce it. Infrared camera scans are showing good progress and will continue for the coming days help focus efforts.

LONG LAKE WILDFIRES COMPLEX, ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2:40 PM

The Long Lake wildfires complex is being held at an estimated 8,468 hectares. There are no new reports of damage. All remaining evacuees will be able to return home on Saturday, September 20 although their roads will not be open to the general public because it is still an active wildfire zone.

Crews continue working on the fire and infrared scans show impressive progress despite dry conditions. Resources available: three helicopters, four planes and a bird dog, five pieces of heavy equipment, and seven water tankers.

Firefighters on site: 23 Department of Natural Resources, 18 from Quebec, 20 from Parks Canada, 5 from PEI, plus support staff.

Travel and Activities In Woods are Restricted

Starting 5 August (at 4pm), travel and activities in woods are restricted to help prevent wildfires. Hiking, camping, fishing and the use of vehicles in the woods are not permitted, trail systems through woods are off limits and camping is allowed only in campgrounds. Restrictions on travel and activities in the woods are lifted in all remaining counties except Annapolis as of 4 p.m. today, September 18.

The change applies to Cumberland, Hants, Lunenburg, Kings, Queens, Shelburne, Digby and Yarmouth counties. Restrictions were lifted in the other nine counties previously.

The restrictions will remain in place in Annapolis County until October 15 – regarded as the end of wildfire season – or until conditions allow them to be lifted. The burn ban remains in place for the entire province until October 15 or until conditions improve further. The fine for violating the woods restrictions or burn ban is $25,000.
