Travel and Activities In Woods are Restricted
Starting 5 August (at 4pm), travel and activities in woods are restricted to help prevent wildfires. Hiking, camping, fishing and the use of vehicles in the woods are not permitted, trail systems through woods are off limits and camping is allowed only in campgrounds. LONG LAKE WILDFIRES COMPLEX, ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, AUGUST 28, 1:45 PM
We unfortunately need to report that 20 homes were lost on August 24 when the Long Lake wildfires complex advanced through the community of West Dalhousie and doubled in size. On other properties, 11 outbuildings were destroyed or damaged. Our hearts go out to these residents.
All the homes that were lost were on West Dalhousie, Morse, and Thorne roads. Not all were primary residences. Damage assessment continues for other homes, outbuildings and campers/trailers as it is safe to do so.
This is still an active fire scene. It is not yet safe for property owners, insurance professionals or other services to enter. Our crews will continue their mission–to protect Nova Scotians, their homes and our forests by tirelessly fighting this fire until it’s extinguished.
LONG LAKE WILDFIRES COMPLEX, ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, AUGUST 28, 11:30 AM
The Long Lake wildfires complex is still out of control. The current size estimate is 8234 hectares. Crews had a very productive day yesterday working on flanks, aiming to limit the growth and spread toward communities as drier conditions return.
Air resources include 11 helicopters, six planes plus bird dogs. Ground resources include 12 Department of Natural Resources (DNR), 89 Ontario, and 70 local firefighters, with over 70 heavy equipment operators. Next update this afternoon.
